Dinner Satellite Symposium

This Interactive ShowCASE™ focuses on the diagnosis and opioid-based therapeutic management of both cancer-related and noncancer persistent and breakthrough pain. The program has several components. First, a media-rich tour will present results from recently published studies, each selected to help integrate level-1 evidence within clinical practice. Selected posters and associated commentary from key opinion leaders will specifically address current diagnostic and management strategies for either cancer-related or chronic noncancer pain, all based on published evidence and individualized patient assessment. Next, faculty will evaluate a standardized patient to explore best practices in the assessment, differential diagnosis, and multimodal treatment of complex chronic pain syndromes. Participating clinicians will also apply their clinical judgment through a virtual case study presented on a hand-held device. Using proprietary software, the case has been deconstructed to reveal the decision making process underlying individualized care. At each decision point along this longitudinal study, participants will choose from among several options. Thought leaders will present the relative merits and limitations of each selection based on available evidence and expert opinion. And finally, faculty will field questions from audience members interested in applying the program’s key findings to their own unique patient populations.
